Test guide
HIV-1 Viral Load
Quantitative measurement of HIV-1 RNA to stage infection and monitor therapy.
What it is for
Establishes baseline viral load before antiretroviral therapy, monitors suppression (target <50 copies/mL), detects virologic failure early, and screens high-risk donors in blood-bank algorithms.
Limitations
Low-level results (50–200 copies/mL) can reflect assay noise; confirmed values above 200 copies/mL on suppressive therapy warrant adherence review and resistance testing. Results are platform-dependent.
Before you test
For individuals: the test needs a blood draw. If you are on treatment, keep taking it normally. Ask your clinician how the result relates to your treatment plan.
