This page explains what the indicator is and how results are interpreted in general terms. Reference ranges depend on the laboratory, the method, and your own situation — no single “normal value” applies to everyone. This page is health information, not a diagnosis. For symptoms, treatment, or urgent concerns, contact a healthcare professional.

When it is tested

Used to confirm active infection after antibody reactivity and to quantify baseline viral load before antiviral therapy; also used during and after treatment to assess response.

Reading results

An antibody-positive, RNA-negative result reflects resolved or cleared infection rather than assay failure, but timing of testing matters during early infection. Quantitative values are platform-specific; sustained-virologic-response definitions belong to clinical protocols, not the laboratory report alone.

Questions to ask a professional

  • Is this ordering qualitative or quantitative?
  • When should the post-treatment confirmatory RNA test be scheduled?
