Test guide

Procalcitonin (PCT)

A biomarker that rises markedly in systemic bacterial infection; used to support antibiotic decisions in respiratory infections and sepsis pathways.

For professionalsReviewed 2026-10-06

What it is for

Supports early discrimination of systemic bacterial infection from non-bacterial causes in specific clinical pathways (notably lower respiratory tract infections and sepsis), and supports antibiotic de-escalation or discontinuation decisions under structured protocols combined with clinical judgement.

Limitations

PCT can rise after major surgery, trauma, shock, or in certain cancers, and may remain normal in some localised or early infections. It is a decision-support tool, never a standalone indication to start or stop antibiotics. Kinetics over serial measurements carry more information than single values.

Before you test

No specific preparation. Tell staff about recent surgery or major trauma, which can raise values.
