Test guide
HPV DNA Screening and Genotyping
Detects high-risk human papillomavirus types used in cervical cancer screening.
What it is for
Primary cervical cancer screening in women 30+ (or 25+ depending on national programme), triage of borderline cytology, and post-treatment follow-up. Genotyping separates HPV16/18, which warrant colposcopy, from other high-risk types managed by repeat testing.
Limitations
A positive high-risk HPV result is an infection, not a cancer diagnosis; most infections clear within two years. Screening intervals and triage depend on national guidelines. Self-sampled HPV testing may have slightly different sensitivity for cytologic endpoints.
Before you test
For individuals: avoid the test during menstruation and for two days after vaginal products or intercourse. Results usually take one to two weeks; ask what follow-up your specific HPV type requires.
