Test guide
Ferritin
The intracellular iron-storage protein measurable in serum; the most useful single test of iron stores.
What it is for
Supports the diagnosis of iron deficiency (especially alongside other iron indices) and of iron overload conditions, and helps distinguish iron-deficiency anaemia from other microcytic anaemias. Low ferritin is highly specific for depleted iron stores.
Limitations
Ferritin is an acute-phase reactant — inflammation, liver disease, and alcohol use raise it, so a normal value does not exclude iron deficiency in inflamed patients, and combined testing (CRP, transferrin saturation) is often needed. Very high values warrant a full iron-overload workup rather than a single-test conclusion.
Before you test
Morning sampling is commonly preferred. Report acute illness or inflammatory conditions, which raise ferritin.
